Configuring VNC to Use Gnome

Problem: On CentOS 4.8, logging into VNC session on server for first time does not show Gnome session.

Solution: Edit the VNC xstartup file.

Edit the ~/.vnc/startup and replace the line

# xterm -geometry 80×24+10+10 -ls -title “$VNCDESKTOP Desktop” &

twm &

with

gnome-session &

When vncserver is first run, the xstartup file should be similar to the following:

[oracle@localhost ~]$ cat .vnc/xstartup
#!/bin/sh

# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
# unset SESSION_MANAGER
# exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
twm &

After replacing the last line, the xstartup file should now appear as follows:

[oracle@localhost ~]$ cat .vnc/xstartup
#!/bin/sh

# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
# unset SESSION_MANAGER
# exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
gnome-session &

After running vncserver, if the GNOME desktop GUI does not load when you connect with the VNC viewer, then try replacing the contents of xstartup with the following:

#!/bin/sh
# Add the following line to ensure you always have an xterm available.
( while true ; do xterm ; done ) &
# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
unset SESSION_MANAGER
exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
gnome-session &

Note that you need to kill the vncserver session and restart it for the changes to take effect. For example, to kill the vncserver session 1, issue the following command:

vncserver -kill :1

Then rerun ‘vncserver’ to restart the VNC server session and reconnect with the VNC viewer.

Installing Oracle Applications 11i Checklist

This is a list of steps to check for when installing Oracle Applications.

Step 1:        Ensure that hostname and IP address are in hosts file. Under Windows, ensure that in the hosts file, the hostname is in the following order:

127.0.0.1                    localhost.localdomain                       localhost

xx.xx.xx.xx               hostname.domainname                   alias

Step 2:        Ping machine. It should return:

C:> ping alias

Pinging hostname.domainname [xx.xx.xx.xx] with 32 bytes of data:

Step 3:        Create domain user applmgr and ensure that it is assigned to the Administrators group of the local machine.

Step 4:        Install Visual C++ 6.0 to C:VC98 and apply service pack 4

Step 5:        Install Cygwin to C:cygwin (see Metalink document “Using Cygwin to Maintain Release 11i on Windows” Doc ID:302859.1 for packages to download).

Step 6:        To compile GNU Make, run VCVARS.bat from Visual C++ directory and in the gnumake-3.79.1 directory, run build_w32.bat twice. Copy gnumake.exe to c:cygwinbin (or C:mksntmksnt).

Step 7:        Install Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 4 or later SDK. Copy file from Microsoft XML Parserlib to C:VC98lib.( 11.5.9)

Changing Logo on OA Portal Home Page

This documentation shows how to change the company logo on the Oracle Applications Portal Home page. This documentation uses Linux commands; substitute Windows commands as necessary.

Problem: The logo on the portal home page is the Oracle logo. The company logo is needed instead.

Solution: Locate the logo image file on the file system and replace it with the company logo.

Step 1: Create a new GIF file with the company logo. Resize the logo so that it no more than 70 pixels in height.

Step 2: Navigate to $COMMON_TOP/portal/$CONTEXT_NAME, e.g.

cd /emcb/test/testcomn/portal/TEST_utterptest

Step 3: Copy the new company logo to the above directory.

Step 4: Backup the original logo by copying it a file with extension OLD, e.g.

cp appsmed3.gif appsmed3.old

Step 5: Copy the new logo to appsmed3.gif, e.g.

cp newlogo.gif appsmed3.gif

The logo is changed on the portal home page.

Reports Developer Quirks and Tips

1. To change the orientation of a report, navigate to Layout Model > Main Section. Bring up Property Palette. Change the Report Width and Report Height under Character Mode e.g. 132 x 66.

2. To view the output as it would appear in Oracle Applications, navigate to Data Model > System Parameters > MODE. Set the Initial Value under Parameter to Character.

3. For Oracle reports that will be registered in Oracle Applications, set the format of the date parameter in the Oracle report to Input Mask:
RRRR/MM/DD HH24:MI:SS

4. Set the corresponding parameter’s format in the Oracle Application concurrent program definition to Date (FND_STANDARD_DATE).

5. When using date parameters in the Where clause of the query, use:
LAST_UPDATE_DATE >=  :P_START_DATE
Not TO_CHAR (:P_START_DATE) or TO_DATE(:P_START_DATE)

6. Colour each frame with a different background to easily identify and distinguish them.

7. To break the page on a frame, change the property ‘Maximum Records per Page’ from 0 to 1.

8. Ensure that the Token field for the Parameter for the Concurrent program matches the user parameters for the Oracle Report.

9. To reset page numbers on a group, insert a field in the layout. Set the source at Physical page number. In the properties for the field you will see field Page Numbering below format mask field. Here you can reset the page numbers according to the group for PO.

10. To get a summary field by group name, in the Data Model view, click on the Summary Column button and then click on the group to enter it in.

11. REP-1212: Object ‘Body’ is not fully enclosed by its enclosing object ”.
Set the Output Style in the Concurrent Program definition for the report to a wider style (either Landscape or Landwide).

Solution: Change the DISPLAY environment variable in Oracle Applications.

Log on to Oracle Applications Manager, and navigate to Site Map > AutoConfig.

There are two context files: one for the Database tier and the other for the Applications Tier. In the Applications tier row, click Edit Parameters. Click the Environments tab. Expand oa_environment:generic_service. Under X11 Display (s_display), change ‘hostname:0.0’ to ‘:0.0’. Save the changes. Then log out of Oracle Applications Manager.

The context file for the application tier must be regenerated. On the server, source the environment, stop the application tier services (adstpall.sh), run AutoConfig on the application tier (adconfig.sh), then restart the application tier services (adstrtal.sh).
